Dengue Outbreak Escalates in Florida Counties
A significant increase in dengue fever cases has been reported in Florida, prompting health authorities to escalate their response. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 3 emergency for dengue outbreaks in Florida and another U.S. territory, marking its eighth emergency response activation this year. According to the latest data, 425 locally acquired dengue cases have been confirmed, with the majority centered in the Tampa Bay area, particularly Hillsborough County. Recent weeks have seen 57 new cases between October 11 and October 17, with notable rises in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. States of emergency have been declared in multiple counties, allowing for enhanced mosquito control efforts and federal support, as infections continue to spread to additional areas including Citrus, Manatee, and Brevard counties. This marks the largest dengue outbreak in the continental United States since 1935, with officials continuing aerial mosquito spraying operations and extending emergency measures to curb transmission.
