Elvis Presley Rights Holders Sue Anthropic
Breaking news today as the owners of Elvis Presley’s music have filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Anthropic. The legal action alleges that Anthropic used copyrighted lyrics from 274 Elvis Presley songs—including major hits such as 'Can’t Help Falling in Love,' 'A Little Less Conversation,' and 'Don’t Be Cruel'—to train its AI models without obtaining authorization or making payments to the rights holders. The suit was brought by Authentic Brands Group, which controls Presley’s intellectual property, along with other plaintiffs, and seeks $41.1 million in statutory damages. According to the complaint, the technology developed by Anthropic is capable of generating new, unauthorized versions of these songs. Anthropic has responded, stating it disagrees with the claims and intends to defend the case fully. The company has previously cited protections under U.S. fair use law for training AI models on copyrighted content. The outcome of this case could set significant precedents regarding the intersection of copyright law and artificial intelligence training practices.
