King Charles Addresses Caribbean Suffering
King Charles III has commenced his official nine-day tour of the Caribbean with a speech in The Bahamas, where he publicly acknowledged "the great suffering and injustices of the past" experienced in the region. The visit, which features stops in Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda, comes amid heightened calls from several former British colonies for the King to take decisive steps towards reparations for the legacy of slavery and colonization. During his first address since becoming monarch, King Charles recognised the dark chapters of history connected to the transatlantic slave trade, stating the importance of acknowledging past suffering even as nations build towards a better future. The tour will also see the King participate in a Commonwealth summit, where discussions are expected to include the issue of reparations for slavery. Despite these calls, the King stopped short of issuing a formal apology, a move noted by international observers. The royal visit has been described by British media as potentially "the most difficult royal tour of his reign."
