Microsoft has withdrawn from an agreement with British AI infrastructure provider Nscale for a planned data center project in Loughton, Essex, according to reports from The Telegraph and Reuters today. The decision comes as the project faces significant delays and chronic electricity supply challenges, with regional grid authorities stating a connection may not be available until the 2030s. Microsoft had been expected to serve as the anchor tenant and deploy 23,000 Nvidia AI chips at the site. The loss of Microsoft as the primary customer leaves Nscale with a partially built flagship facility and occurs as the company prepares for a $3 billion US initial public offering. Nscale, maintaining its commitment to the location, is now pursuing alternative power sources and further expansion opportunities in the UK. The company stated that its relationship with Microsoft remains strong and that ongoing electricity access issues are not expected to impact other contracts. Microsoft has not issued a public comment regarding the withdrawal.
