A critical cyber-security emergency has forced hundreds of government, hospital, and school websites across Europe and other regions offline after severe vulnerabilities were discovered in PHP, a programming language that powers a large portion of the internet. The vulnerabilities, identified by artificial intelligence and confirmed by PHP developers, affect all supported versions of PHP and have been rated as critical, with a severity score of 9.2 out of 10. Hackers began actively exploiting the flaws, prompting urgent warnings from cybersecurity agencies in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Australia, and Japan. In response, authorities instructed website operators to either immediately update their PHP installations with emergency patches released by developers or take their sites offline as a precaution. Among the affected were vital European institutions, such as the Port of Rotterdam and the Dutch House of Representatives, which disconnected their sites. The U.S. National Security Agency and other organizations also emphasized the necessity of disconnecting vulnerable systems until fully patched. Despite these measures, the current operational status of all impacted websites remains unclear, as patching millions of affected sites will require considerable time and coordination. The incident has underscored the widespread dependence of critical infrastructure on PHP and the urgent need for robust cyber-security protocols.
