Boston researchers have released the largest analysis to date examining colorectal cancer tumors among younger patients, revealing significant biological differences compared to older individuals. According to the latest findings, colon cancer in younger people involves higher activity of long non-coding RNAs and increased gene signaling that may allow cancer cells to move and invade surrounding tissue more effectively. The study also found that the proportion of stromal cells to cancer cells was greater in younger patients, with their numbers declining with age. Experts point to lifestyle and environmental factors, such as diet and consumption of ultra-processed foods, as contributing risks, but stress the importance of understanding the unique tumor biology in younger populations. Medical professionals say these insights could pave the way for future breakthroughs in prevention and treatment.
