Two Charged in Iran-Linked RAF Fairford Plot
British authorities have charged two men, Mohmed Abdulkarim and Nouman Essghir, both 24 and residents of London, with serious security offenses following an alleged Iran-linked terror plot targeting RAF Fairford, a military air base in Gloucestershire used by the United States. According to prosecutors, Abdulkarim is accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service, believed to be Iran, by arranging for a group to travel to the base and obtain supplies including petrol. Essghir was first arrested outside RAF Fairford in September and is charged with entering a prohibited place for purposes seen as prejudicial to the United Kingdom, as well as reportedly conducting reconnaissance at the site. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated it is highly likely the incident was coordinated in Iran, a claim denied by Iran's ambassador. The charges follow an investigation by British counterterrorism police and come amid growing concern over alleged activities linked to Iran targeting UK interests. The defendants appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, with further details of the plot and Iran's direct involvement yet to be fully established, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.
