US Envoy to Present Peace Plan to Putin
White House envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg to deliver an updated US-backed proposal aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, according to US officials. Witkoff's visit to Russia follows a day of diplomatic talks in Oslo, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with leaders from Norway and Finland and high-level representatives from France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the European Union, and NATO. The discussions in Oslo were described as constructive, with meaningful progress made toward a coordinated approach to engaging Russia. Jared Kushner, senior adviser to President Trump, will participate in the meeting with Putin virtually. The renewed American diplomatic push comes amid expectations that recent US concessions, including the lifting of sanctions on Russian diesel sales, may prompt greater compromise from Moscow. The proposal to Putin is based on new ideas introduced by Ukraine and reflects coordinated efforts with European and NATO allies to revive negotiations and advance a pathway toward peace.
