Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, reported a major security breach after hackers used a fake job interview to infiltrate the company. According to Binance, the attack began when a company software engineer was approached for a job opportunity and participated in multiple interviews, including one conducted via a popular social app. During the technical assessment, the engineer was asked to download code onto a work computer. This code contained malware that circumvented existing security measures. Binance confirmed the malware allowed attackers to compromise an internal AI tool, enabling them to steal around $6.3 billion in digital assets. The FBI attributed the operation to a North Korean hacking group, a claim North Korea has denied. Binance stated it detected and blocked dozens of similar cyber intrusion attempts this year involving bogus job interviews, and emphasized it remains financially stable while cooperating with law enforcement to recover the stolen funds. The investigation is ongoing.
