Federal health authorities have reported an increase of 178 measles cases in the United States this week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 4,588 as of October 22. The rise comes amidst ongoing outbreaks affecting at least 43 locations across the country. CDC data indicates that children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 are the most affected group, representing 42 percent of all reported cases, closely followed by adults aged 20 and over. Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania state health department reports five measles-related deaths, though the CDC has confirmed three of these fatalities. The release of the latest figures arrives amid criticism of the CDC regarding the transparency of its reporting, as well as ongoing debate over US vaccine policy following actions by health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to alter the nation’s vaccine infrastructure.
