French health authorities have confirmed the first-ever human case of the Shamonda virus, a pathogen previously known only to affect livestock, in a patient in Lyon. The individual, who was severely immunocompromised, died earlier this month after being treated at Hospices Civils de Lyon. Authorities state the neurological complications observed before the patient’s death were very likely linked to the infection, though the exact role of the virus in the fatal outcome remains uncertain. The Shamonda virus, primarily transmitted to animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats by biting midges, had until now not been detected in humans. French officials emphasize that this is an exceptional and isolated case with no identified risk to the general public. The event has been reported to the World Health Organization, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to monitor the situation. No evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission has been identified.
