The European Union has called for urgent measures following a series of cyberattacks targeting supermarket refrigeration systems across Germany, Romania, and the United Kingdom. According to official reports, the attacks affected stores in at least 11 European countries, including Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden. These incidents have resulted in widespread food spoilage, forcing retailers to discard perishable goods. EU officials described the cyberattacks as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the continent’s food supply chain, though Romania’s cybersecurity chief characterised the attacks as 'semi-amateurish' and indicated that there is no suspicion of a state actor being involved. The National Cyber Security Centre in the UK reported minimal impact on national supply and is working with affected companies to manage the situation. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, and the motive remains unknown. EU authorities are urging supermarkets to disconnect affected systems from the internet as a precaution while investigations continue.
