Supermarkets in several European countries are facing significant disruptions following a wave of cyberattacks targeting their refrigeration and freezer systems. According to multiple news agencies, including Reuters and PBS, stores in Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, The Netherlands, and Estonia reported overnight incidents where hackers accessed fridge and freezer controllers, causing temperatures to spike as high as 50 degrees Celsius. Staff were forced to discard large quantities of spoiled food due to these sudden malfunctions. The attacks mirror similar incidents recently reported in France and involved remotely overriding temperature controls, placing public food safety at risk and raising concerns about the vulnerability of retail technology systems. Although cybersecurity experts suggest that extortion, political motives, or nation-state operations could be behind these coordinated attacks, no group has claimed responsibility. Retail operators are now working to restore normal operations and enhance system security, while authorities across Europe investigate the source and intent behind these cyber intrusions.
