Russia Forces Closure of Novaya Gazeta
Breaking news: Russia has forced the closure of Novaya Gazeta, one of the country’s last independent investigative newspapers, according to multiple reports. The newspaper ceased its operations following escalating state pressure, including the revocation of its media license, raids, criminal prosecutions of staff, and its recent designation as a 'foreign agent.' Editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov announced the end of publication, stating, 'Novaya Gazeta is ceasing to exist.' The closure comes amid heightened scrutiny and restrictions against independent media in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Novaya Gazeta had already reduced its activities as authorities intensified censorship, blocked online resources, and restricted donations and financial operations. The editorial board reported that the outlet had been deprived of the means to continue, marking a significant blow to press freedom in Russia and leaving the country with very few remaining independent news voices.
