Emergency Alert Apps in Ukraine, Russia Hacked
Breaking news: Ukrainian and Russian emergency alert apps were compromised overnight, sending false warnings to residents, including messages about nuclear, chemical, and radiation threats. In Ukraine, the main air raid warning app issued its highest-level alerts across the country, including reports of street fighting in Kyiv, prompting authorities to quickly flag a potential cyberattack. Shortly after, Russia’s Ministry of Emergencies confirmed that its official app also issued fake warnings, including claims of nuclear warhead launches, following what officials described as a massive cyberattack. Ukrainian authorities stressed that the security and defense systems were not affected by the hack, and the alert app service was suspended and later restored. Russian and Ukrainian officials both attributed the breaches to sophisticated cyber intrusions. The events have raised concerns about the security of public warning systems amid ongoing tensions between the two countries.
